In an effort to bolster compliance with tax and insurance legislation, the National Revenue Agency (NRA) of Bulgaria has announced the commencement of its summer control campaign along the picturesque Black Sea coast. This initiative will see fiscal inspectors, including those dispatched from the country's interior, conduct rigorous checks to ensure adherence to financial and fiscal regulations.

As the summer season unfolds, the NRA has planned an ambitious schedule of over 6,000 inspections targeting a variety of establishments, including restaurants, nightclubs, shops, attractions, and parking facilities. A significant number of these sites are already under active surveillance, with daily oversight extending to exchanges and markets supplying hotels with essential food and beverages.

The campaign's primary objective is to enhance fiscal discipline among businesses, encouraging voluntary compliance with established rules, fostering an equitable business environment, and ensuring the accurate reporting of turnover.

A novel approach within the campaign involves the use of the "mystery customer" method during control purchases. Additionally, tax inspectors will conduct explicit observations, monitoring sales over specific periods and comparing the data with historical records. The NRA will leverage the remote connection capabilities of cash registers to its servers, identifying traders whose sales patterns exhibit notable deviations from the norm. In a move to empower consumers, the NRA reminds the public of their right to withhold payment until a proper fiscal receipt is issued. This consumer protection measure was reinforced by a recent amendment to the VAT Law, effective January 1, 2024, aimed at intensifying the crackdown on revenue evasion and unfair competition.

Citizens can further participate in revenue reporting through the NRA Mobile application, which allows for the scanning of QR codes on receipts. The app is available for download on both the App Store for iOS devices and Google Play for Android users. The NRA encourages reports of any discrepancies, such as non-issuance of receipts or incomplete payment documents, through the Information Center at 0700 18 700 or via email at infocenter@nra.bg.
