The Nebraska Department of Revenue (DOR) has updated its rules on how retailers can advertise sales tax. Businesses cannot claim they will cover, absorb, or exclude sales tax from a purchase price in any advertisement.

The DOR listed examples of prohibited phrases, including:

  • "Tax-Free Sale"
  • "Pay No Sales Tax"
  • "We Will Pay Your Sales Tax"
  • "Receive a Discount Equal to the Sales Tax"

By law, retailers must charge and display sales tax separately from the selling price on invoices. To ensure compliance, businesses can consult the DOR before running an advertising campaign.
