As Bulgaria prepares to officially adopt the euro, citizens are being worried about the future of their old lev banknotes and coins. A structured and accessible exchange process has been introduced to ensure a smooth transition.

The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) has announced that it will offer unlimited exchanges of levs for euros at the official exchange rate. This service will be free of charge and have no expiration date, allowing citizens to exchange their currency years after the euro’s introduction without incurring fees.

Additionally, credit institutions will facilitate unlimited exchanges during the first six months of the euro’s adoption, free of charge. However, for amounts exceeding 30,000 BGN, individuals must submit a prior request at least three business days in advance. Bulgarian Posts Ltd. will also provide exchange services during this period, but with limitations. Citizens can exchange up to 1,000 levs per day free of charge, while amounts between 1,000 and 10,000 levs will require prior requests and be restricted to specific post offices. Exchanges over 10,000 levs per day will not be permitted.

For one month following the euro’s introduction, lev banknotes and coins will remain legal tender, giving individuals more time to adjust. The BNB’s unlimited exchange option will ensure long-term flexibility, even after the initial transition period. As a reminder, the official date of Euro as a official currency has not yet been determined, but it is expected to be presented soon.
